4-Day Tour to Nagorno Karabakh
Armenia & Karabakh, 4 days / 3 nights
Group: 1–8 pers.
Discover a treasured nook of the mountainous Caucasus by immersing yourself in the bustling, rich culture of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. Through this unique and invigorating four-day tour, you’ll experience the rhythm of everyday local life, taste delicious food, explore historical sites, and enjoy the leisure of the highland countryside.
Through walking tours and car rides along picturesque roads we’ll explore little known but symbolic historical landmarks, end our day with a traditional feast, and spend the night at the homes of welcoming locals. An expert guide will accompany us at all times but, rest assured, this isn’t a typical excursion that hops from one touristy spot to another. It’s a real adventure that will expose you to the authentic wonders of Armenia!
The tour will start and end in Yerevan, taking a circular route that will enable us to see half the country in just a matter of days. Outlined below are very brief descriptions of the beautiful places that we’ll visit—keep in mind that words cannot do these gorgeous locales justice!
Day 1. Lake Sevan and Northern Karabakh (L/D)
We’ll depart early from Yerevan and head to Lake Sevan, making a few stops along the coast, including a visit to an ancient monastery, and a tasting of locally produced cheeses and a typical countryside lunch. Next we’ll journey to mountainous Karvachar, the most scenic region of Karabakh. As we move onward we’ll charge the medieval fortress of Andaberd, then bathe in the hot springs of a wild gorge. At the end of the day, we’ll enjoy dinner and spend the night at the house of a local skilled craftsman, and our good friend, Martiros Chalumyan.
Day 2. Shrines of Artsakh (B/L/D)
Another morning departure—We’ll continue our trip into the picturesque gorge of the Tartar River, stopping at the monastery of Dadivank, an ancient Christian shrine of Eastern Armenia. Next we’ll drive along a scenic highway that runs through thick Karabakh forests. Around midday we’ll visit an eclectic village called Vank, then take a short climb up to the monastery of Gandzasar. We’ll lunch at the house-museum of a 20th century local war hero, and then head to the capital and check into a guest house. Once in Stepanakert we’ll walk through the gorge of the Karkar River to an abandoned village of millers. There we’ll swim under waterfalls before returning to the guest house for dinner and a tasting of wine and vodka, as our host will be a genuine winemaker-cum-alchemist.
Day 3. Old Capital and Mountainous Sunik (B/L/D)
Before noon, we’ll visit the old capital of Karabakh, the Shushi stronghold. With charming locals as our guides, we’ll tour the old quarters and fortress walls of the city, and even visit the local rug museum. Lunch will be enjoyed at a restaurant with a breathtaking view of the valley, then we will leave Karabakh via the Lachin strip which was fiercely fought for. Along the way we’ll explore the famous cave-city of Khndzoresk, and take the longest single-span aerial tramway in the world to the medieval monastery of Tatev. Here we will enjoy dinner with a view of the mountains. We’ll spend the night at the home of a local farmer.
Day 4. Wine Lands and the Ararat Valley (B/L)
After a countryside breakfast, we’ll head west. On the way we’ll stop at Karahunj, a megalithic and ancient observatory. Next we’ll descend into the winemaking region of Areni, where we’ll walk through a red-cliffed canyon towards the medieval monastery of Noravank. There we’ll enjoy a homemade lunch in a cave tavern before descending further into the Ararat Valley. In the afternoon we will visit Khor-Virap Monastery, a prominent Christian shrine that offers a classic view of Mt. Ararat. After gazing upon the mountain, we’ll return to Yerevan in the evening.
