Entry permit for the South Ossetia
South Ossetia does not issue visas. Moreover, the region has yet to establish an accurately operating procedure for obtaining entry permits. Visitors are required to get an entry permit, which is not a document, but a phone call from the ministry of Foreign Affairs to the checkpoint in Upper Ruk village. The KGB (Committee of State Security) controls all visits to South Ossetia by foreign tourists, that is why tourists can visit South Ossetia only when accompanied by a local guide at all times.
How to get a permit to South Ossetia
According to the law it takes up to 30 days to obtain a permit, but in reality it can take up to 3 months! Tourists cannot apply for permits themselves, only organizations registered in South Ossetia are able to do this. In reality, only one small tour-company closely related to the Tourism Development Department of South Ossetia is able to do it, and applications from other tour-companies will be rejected.
