South Ossetia 6-days tour

South Ossetia

This tour is for those who’d like to know South Ossetia in details, but is not ready for mountain trekkings. We’ll visit the main gorges of the country and have enough time to visit all of the most outstanding sights, will meet so many different people on the way and take part in traditional feasts. And each day we’ll come back to a cozy hotel.
Keep in mind, this plan does not describes everything that will happen during the trip. We always try to make each travel unique and organize experiences for our guests, which will be interesting just for them.


Day 1. Arrival

We recommend to fly via Moscow (SVO), flight of Aeroflot 7:50 — 10:40, approximate price is 50 — 100 USD.

The guide will meet you in the airport of Vladikavkaz. After a short walk, lunch and visiting the main sight of the city you’ll go to mountains. Night is planned in Tsey valley, which is on thee way to South Ossetia. This place, besides it is just incredibly beautiful, is culturally very important. Rekom shrine, one of the most important holy places of Ossetian traditional religion, is here.
Night in Vertikal 3* hotel.

Day 2. Tskhinval

After the walk to the shrine we’ll go to the border of South Ossetia. Border crossing is unpredictable. Usually it takes about an hour, but sometimes it takes 2 and even 3 hours.
After all formalities we’ll go to the most important shrine of South Ossetia. That is Djery dzuar. We’ll make picnic above the shrine. Then we’ll go to Tskhinval.
In the capital of South Ossetia we’ll meet one of veterans of the wars for Independence and walk in the town together.
Visit one of local families for lunch.
Night in “Uyut” hotel or similar.

Day 3. Leningor district

This day we’ll go east from Tskhinval. We’ll visit Leningor district which was under Georgian control till 2008. We’ll visit the palace of Ksani ersitavs, who were one of the most powerfull feudals of South Caucasus and owned almost a third part of the territory of South Ossetia.
Then we’ll go back to Tskhinval district and hike up to Usanet shrine, placed on the top of the high hill. If you are in a good shape we can walk further to see the defensive tower of Margita clan, placed on a rock ledge.
In the evening we’ll local family or with Tola Goyaev — former combat commander and now one of the best winegrowers of the country.

Day 4. Medieval heritage

This day will go west from Tskhinval to see ancient churches and fortresses and also talk to locals in the valley of Prone river. The highlights of the day are Tir monastery, the fortress and the palace in Dzagina, the church of XIII century in Tigwa village.
In the evening we’ll be back in Tskhinval.
Night in “Uyut” hotel or similar.

Day 5. Kudaro

This day we’ll go to the mountains of Kudaro gorge. We’ll see Ertso lake and stop in Tson — one of the most beautiful villages of South Ossetia.
Depending on your physical shape we’ll make a light hike in the surroundings of the village or visit Kvaisa, the soviet town of miners.
In the evening we’ll be back in Tskhinval.

Day 6. Tual’s gorge

In this day we’ll visit the most highland part of the country — the upper reaches of the Great Liakhva river and and it’s tributary Ermandon.
Tual (Dval) people lives here. They are one of Ossetian subethnic groups. Routs of these people is one of the most disputed matters of polemics between Georgian, Ossetian and even Ingush scientists.
A great number of suars — healing mineral springs with carbonated water. Despite tough climate people still lives here. We’ll communicate with on of the families at lunch time.
One of the most highland villages of Europe is placed here, that is Erman. The altitude of the center is at approximately 2100 meters.
In the evening we’ll cross the border and go back to Vladikavkaz.
